Word-pair priming with biased homonyms: N400 and LPC effects

چکیده

In an ERP investigation of biased homonym processing in minimal context, isolated homonym primes (e.g., ruler) preceded targets that were associated with either the dominant (e.g., inch) or subordinate (e.g., king) meaning of the homonym, were unrelated words (e.g., claw), or were nonwords (e.g., smole), presented 250 ms later in a lexical decision paradigm. Both dominant and subordinate associates elicited smaller amplitude N400s and LPCs than unrelated word targets. The N400 priming effect was greater for dominant than subordinate associates, reflecting sensitivity to meaning frequency and lexical competition between the two homonym meanings. The LPC priming effect was similar for dominant and subordinate associates, reflecting post-lexical relational processing between prime and target. In this paradigm, priming effects of meaning frequency due to automatic spreading activation extended only to the N400 time window; shortly thereafter, effects of lexical dominance disappeared and reprocessing of the binary relatedness of the homonym prime and subsequent word target took precedence. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Tracking lexical consolidation with ERPs: Lexical and semantic-priming effects on N400 and LPC responses to newly-learned words.

Novel words can be recalled immediately and after little exposure, but require a post-learning consolidation period to show word-like behaviour such as lexical competition. This pattern is thought to reflect a qualitative shift from episodic to lexical representations. However, several studies have reported immediate effects of meaningful novel words on semantic processing, suggesting that inte...

The N400 elicited by homonyms in puns: Two primes are not better than one.

To comprehend a pun involving a homonym (e.g., The prince with a bad tooth got a crown), both meanings of the homonym must be accessed and selected. Previous ERP studies have shown that the N400 reflects lexicosemantic processing, but none have directly investigated the N400 elicited by homonyms in the unique context of puns. Here, N400 priming effects showed that the dual context of puns (e.g....

ERP abnormalities elicited by word repetition in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and amnestic MCI.

BACKGROUND Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), a neurodegenerative disorder caused by FMR1 gene premutations, typically associated with frontal-subcortical type cognitive impairments. High prevalence (~50%) of superimposed Alzheimer׳s pathology has been reported in FMR1 premutation carriers, and standardized neuropsychological tests have not yielded any robust discriminators be...

Do Spanish–English Bilinguals have Their Fingers in Two Pies – or is It Their Toes? An Electrophysiological Investigation of Semantic Access in Bilinguals

We examined the time course of cross-language activation during word recognition in the context of semantic priming with interlingual homographs. Spanish-English bilinguals were presented pairs of English words visually one word at a time and judged whether the two words were related in meaning while recording event-related potentials. Interlingual homographs (e.g., "pie": "Pie" in Spanish is a...

Event-related brain potentials of masked repetition and semantic priming while listening to sentences.

We combined for the first time electrophysiological measures and masked priming technique in sentential context, by setting up a cross-modal masked priming paradigm involving the auditory presentation of sentences. ERPs were time-locked to an auditorily presented word that was preceded by a repeated, related or unrelated pattern masked prime. We registered a two-way N400-difference between unre...
